Bigger than love…an interview to lovely Issa and her ‘Le Marche Magic’

One of the things I love best of having started my blog is the chance to get in touch with many people and other bloggers.
I love to discuss and exchage points of view with people with different experiences, cultures and nationalities. This makes you feel close to so many friends, even at distance. Each of them with different interests and passions, but all linked from following a blog or from writing their own where they talk about what they particoularly care about. Sometimes it also happens to find bloggers with very similar passion to yours…that’s what happened with Issa, an American lady who moved in Le Marche seven years ago and I got in touch with thanks to her own blog: Le Marche Magic. Please keep reading this wonderful interview, which is also the outcome of a beautiful interaction between bloggers 🙂

Where are you originally from and when/where did you move to Italy? Did you move with family?  

• I did not move with a family but on my own at 39 yrs of age. I moved here from where I was living at the time, the smallest state in the United States called Rhode Island. I moved here to be with my grandmother who lived in Florence. I say lived cause she passed away over a year ago. [We’re very sorry to hear that]

How did you find the transition to living in a foreign country? 

• I found the transition extremely easy, since I am a woman who loves the challenges life presents me. I love people and traveling. I feel mother earth is our home and would love to meet as many different types of people with also different beliefs than my own, I feel this will complete me on my own life’s journey.

How does the Italian culture differ from home? Which aspect of Italian life was most difficult to get used to?

• To be specific, Le Marche how it differs from home is that the lifestyle here is wholesome something I have not to pay a whole paycheck to have but here it is a way of life that I love. For me there was nothing difficult to get used to, it all came naturally to me because I feel this is a way of life we are supposed to live.

What are the locals like? Do you mix mainly with other expats?

• I love the ‘marchigiani’! They have a way about them of watching you for about a year to sum up who you are before letting you in…This is good, because we all should pick the people in our lives the way we pick our fruit…I mix with expats who have integrated in to the lifestyle here only.

Was it easy meeting people, making friends and integrate into the community?

• Yes, I have been very fortunate to have made many many wonderful life friends and also have been the witness/ maid of honor for a dear friend, as well. I do have a habit of making lifetime friends wherever I go. 

Is there anything you miss about living in Usa?

• No.

What do you enjoy most about living in Le Marche and the Italian lifestyle?

• The way I am able to live my life, healthy.

What’s your favorite Italian food?

• Very hard question to answer because every region has a specialty, but I am partial to seafood. No I love seafood and vegetables … and here it is all fresh and that is wonderful!!!

In our blog we try to incentivize people from all around the world to find out more about Italy and particoularly about Le Marche and their local tradition. Have you ever visited Le Marche before and if so what did you love the most about Le Marche?

• Before 2009 I had never heard of Le Marche…and I love EVERYTHING this is why I also have started a blog to bring the world here…secretly because it should remain a treasure always and the tourist that come to visit should be people who want to keep the traditions and help keep the goodies of Le Marche. I would hate anyone who came and disrespected this beautiful region of Italy. I would never want it to become like Venice or Florence or Rome for that matter.

How difficult was getting a work visa/permit?

• I was lucky to have found my soulmate here…but I did try and get a 1yr visa and it is not an easy thing to get if your an American. First they want to know if you have at least $100,000.00 dollars in your bank account (I kid you not) they want proof…and you also need to have a monthly check from , social security or retirement. Just to make sure ur not coming here to steal work. I personally had over $45,000.00 and a letter from the Secretary of State of Rhode Island and a letter from someone here in Le Marche (who is very influential) to say they would house me free of charge to just write my book….yes, at the time I wanted to write a book as well. But when I met my husband to be, not a lawyer would touch me, but to be honest with the internet and my wits I managed to get all the paperwork needed through New York and a firm I hired there.

How does the Italian work culture differ from your country?

• Here they believe in family and…vacations.

How does cost of living compare to home?

• It is so much cheaper here to live.

What negatives, if any, are there to living in Italy?

• None!!!

What are your top tips to any future expats or people considering moving to Italy from abroad?

• Do it!!! Live everywhere you find your place on this earth and be limitless with your life.

In retrospective is there anything you would change?

• Not a thing.

Why should people visit Italy? 

• Well from everything I have written above, it is obvious that I believe that every human being should travel. “Mother Earth is our home, just like you know all that is in your house. One should visit and try and understand as many humans beings living on our planet. Maybe we don’t incorporate always their lifestyles into our own, but what makes us RICH is at least understanding where they are coming from.” [Quote by Issa:-)]

You are also writing your own blog.  Can you tell us a bit about it and when/why did you start your blog?  

• Yes my blog is called Le Marche Magic, I love where I live here in Le Marche and have found MY OWN special place on our mother earth. I would like to share it, I feel the untouched nature of Le Marche can really help and touch many people. Even if they come for a visit or to live. Le Marche is a way of life.

Un amore grandissimo…intervista all’adorabile Issa e il suo “Le Marche Magic”

Una delle cose che mi piace di piu’ dello scrivere un blog e’ quella di poter entrare in contatto con tantissime altre persone e blogger. Capita spesso di scambiare opinioni e di discutere con persone con esperienze, culture e nazionalità’ diverse. Un vero e proprio scambio che permettere di sentirsi vicini a tanti amici, anche lontani. Ognuno con interessi e passioni diverse, ma legate dal seguire o scrivere un proprio blog, dove parlare di qualcosa a cui si tiene particolarmente. A volte capita anche di trovare altri blogger con passioni molto simili alle nostre…cosi e’ stato con Issa, ragazza americana trasferitasi nelle Marche sette anni fa’ e conosciuta grazie al suo blog: Le Marche Magic. Vi lascio a questa bellissima intervista, frutto di una bellissima interazione tra bloggers:-)

Qual’è la tua nazione d’origine e dove/quando ti sei trasferita nelle Marche? Ti sei spostata con la famiglia?

• Non mi sono spostata con famiglia a seguito, ma per conto mio all’eta’ di 39 anni. Mi sono trasferita da dove vivevo all’epoca, ovvero il piu’ piccolo degli stati americani: Rhode Island. Mi sono trasferita per stare vicina a mia nonna che viveva a Firenze, la quale sfortunatamente e’ venuta a mancare un anno fa’. [Ci dispiace tantissimo]

Come è stato il passaggio e l’ambientarsi a vivere in un paese straniero?

• Per me e’ stato estremamente facile, in quanto mi considero una donna che ama le sfide che la vita mi presenta. Amo le persone e viaggiare. Credo che Madre Terra sia la nostra casa e mi piacerebbe incontrare il maggior numero di persone diverse possibile, con culture, credo ed esperienze diverse dalla mia. Ritengo che in questo mi possa completare a livello personale nel cammino della mia vita.

In che modo la cultura italiana differisce dalle tua? A quale aspetto della vita italiana è stato più difficile abituarsi?

• Per essere precisi, lo stile di vita qui è qualcosa di sano. E’ il tipo di vita che amo. Per me non c’e’ stato nulla di particolarmente difficile a cui abituarmi. Tutto è successo naturalmente, perché per me questo è il modo in cui tutti dovremmo vivere.

Come sono le persone del posto? Vi trovate spesso con altri ‘expats’ (emigrati)?

• Amo i ‘marchigiani’! Hanno un certo non so che’ di guardarti per un po’ per capire davvero chi sei per poi lasciarsi andare ed accoglierti a braccia aperte…Questo è un bene, perché tutti noi dovremmo scegliere le persone nella nostra vita con la stessa cura con cui scegliamo la frutta. Mi trovo solo con altri expats che come me si sono integrati appieno con il nuovo stile di vita.

E’ stato semplice incontrare nuove persone, trovare amici e integrarsi con la comunità’?

• Sì, sono stata molto fortunata ad avere incontrato davvero moltissimi amici meravigliosi e sono stata anche la damigella d’onore per una cara amica. Ho la fortuna di instaurare delle vere amicizie ovunque io vada.

C’e’ qualcosa che ti manca del vivere in America?

• No.

Cosa ti piace di più delle Marche e dello stile di vita italiano?

• Il modo in cui vivo la mia vita: in maniera sana.

Qual’e’ il tuo cibo italiano preferito? 

• Domanda molto difficile a cui rispondere perché ogni regione ha la sua specialità. Personalmente la mia preferenza ricade sui piatti a base di pesce. Adoro anche la frutta e le verdure in generale…qui tutto e’ fresco, il che è meraviglioso!!!

Con il nostro blog cerchiamo d’ incentivare le persone provenienti da tutto il mondo a scoprire Le Marche e le tradizioni locali. Che cosa ti piace di più delle Marche e qual è la differenza più grande rispetto ad altre regioni italiane?

• Prima del 2009 non avevo mai sentito parlare delle Marche…e adoro davvero ogni cosa delle Marche. Questo è anche il motivo per cui ho anch’io ho iniziato a scrivere un blog con lo scopo d’incentivare quante piu’ persone possibili e da ovunque a visitare Le Marche…un po’ in segreto perché vorrei comunque che rimanessero un tesoro. E allo stesso tempo perche’ il turista che viene a visitare Le Marche dovrebbe essere una persone che desidera mantenere le tradizioni locali e supportare i ‘tesori’ delle Marche. Mi dispiacerebbe molto se qualcuno mancasse di rispetto a questa bella regione d’Italia. Non vorrei mai che diventasse come Venezia o Firenze o Roma in termini di ‘turismo di massa’.

Quanto è stato difficile ottenere un visto di lavoro/permesso?

• Sono stata fortunata ad aver trovato la mia anima gemella qui...tuttavia avevo provato ad ottenere un visto di 1 anno e non è affatto semplice per una persona di nazionalita’ americana. Prima di tutto e’ necessario disporre di almeno $ 100,000.00 dollari sul proprio conto corrente (non sto’ scherzando) e fornirne le prove…Inoltre, e’ necessario avere un assegno mensile o una pensione. Questo per attestare che non si e’ venuti qui per portare via lavoro. Personalmente avevo più di $ 45,000.00 e una lettera del Segretario di Stato di Rhode Island oltre che una lettera da qualcuno qui nelle Marche (una persona molto influente) per confermare che mi avrebbero ospitato gratuitamente al solo scopo di scrivere il mio libro…sì, all’epoca volevo scrivere anche un libro.
  Ma quando ho incontrato il mio attuale marito, nessun avvocato avrebbe potuto fare obiezioni. Tuttavia, grazie ad internet e al mio ingegno, sono riuscita ad ottenere tutte le pratiche burocratiche necessarie tramite un’agenzia a New York.

In che modo la cultura del lavoro italiana differisce da quella del vostro paese?

• Qui si crede feramente nella famiglia e…nelle ferie!

Com’è il costo della vita in Italia se confrontato con quello del vostro paese d’origine?

• Il costo della vita in generale e’ molto meno costoso qui.

Quali sono i lati negativi (se ce ne sono) del vivere in Italia?

• Nessuno!!!

Quali consigli ti senti di dare ai futuri ‘expats’ e a tutti coloro che stanno considerando l’idea di trasferirsi in Italia dall’estero?

• Fatelo!!! Provate a vivere ovunque nel mondo finche’ non troverete il vostro posto ideale su questa terra e cercate di limitare il meno possibile la vostra vita.

Ripensando alla scelta fatta, c’è qualcosa che cambieresti?

• Assolutamente non una virgola.

Perché la gente dovrebbe visitare e scoprire l’Italia?

• Ebbene da tutto quello che ho scritto sopra, è scontato che io sia fortemetne convinta del fatto che ogni essere umano dovrebbe viaggiare.
  “Madre Terra è casa nostra, proprio come si conosce tutto ciò che è in casa propria. Chiunque dovrebbe visitare e cercare di capire quanti piu’ altri popoli e culture che vivono il nostro pianeta. Probabimente non assimileremo sempre il loro stile di vita al nostro, ma ciò che rende ricca una persona è almeno capire le loro radici culturali” [Citazione da Issa :-)]

Anche tu scrivi su un blog. Ti va’ di parlarcene un po’ e dirci quando e perché hai deciso di aprirlo?

• Sì. Il mio blog si chiama Le Marche Magic, amo vivere nelle Marche e sento di aver trovato IL MIO posto speciale sulla madre terra. Vorrei condividerlo, sento che la natura incontaminata delle Marche potrebbe davvero aiutare e far sentire a casa molte altre persone. Sia per una semplice visita che per viverci. Le Marche è un modo di vivere.
